About gold in Denmark
Denmark's precious-metal hallmarking law dates to a 1907 statute, in force since 1910, which required items to carry both a maker's mark and an official purity mark, with permitted gold fineness levels of 500, 750, 850, 900 and 950. Denmark remains one of a smaller group of European countries — alongside the UK, Ireland, Poland and Sweden — where hallmarking gold jewellery is a legal requirement, not a voluntary industry practice.
Market notes for Denmark
Denmark follows the EU-wide investment-gold VAT exemption: qualifying bars and coins (900+ fineness, minted after 1800, legal tender, priced within 80% of their metal value) are sold VAT-free, while investment silver carries Denmark's full 25% VAT -- one of the largest gold/silver tax gaps in the EU.
Buying gold in Denmark
Denmark's 25% standard VAT rate is among the highest in Europe, so the gap between a VAT-exempt investment gold bar and a VAT-inclusive piece of jewellery is unusually large here -- confirm which category a Danish quote falls into before comparing prices.
Tax and duty notes for Denmark
Qualifying investment gold is VAT-exempt in Denmark under the EU-wide investment-gold rules in place since 2000: gold bars and wafers must be at least 995 fine (99.5% pure), while gold coins qualify at 900+ fine (90% pure) provided they were minted after 1800, are or were legal tender, and are priced within 80% of their metal value. Gold jewellery and other non-qualifying gold products are taxed at Denmark's standard 25% VAT rate — the same rate that applies to investment silver, which unlike gold has no exemption.

Methodology
How we calculate the price
- We fetch the international spot gold price (XAU/USD) live from gold-api.com, with automatic failover between providers.
- The spot rate is converted into the local currency using live exchange rates from exchangerate-api.com, then scaled by purity (24K, 22K, 18K…) and by weight (gram, tola, ounce, kilogram, baht).
- The result is the pure spot value. Retail counters may add dealer premium, tax and making charges — the number here is the underlying benchmark.
