About gold in Austria
Austrian law (the Punzierungsgesetz, or Hallmarking Act) sets a notably high minimum: gold jewellery must be at least 585/1000 (14 karat) to be legally hallmarked and sold as gold in Austria. Austria has also given a name to a specific, well-documented gold-buying scam known as "Autobahngold" ("highway gold"), where counterfeit hallmarked rings are sold to unsuspecting drivers at motorway rest stops using urgent, high-pressure stories — common enough that Austrian jewellers routinely warn customers to have any purchased piece independently re-tested rather than trust the hallmark alone.
Market notes for Austria
Investment gold in Austria -- bars and coins meeting EU purity rules, plus Austria's own commercial gold coins such as ducats, crowns and guilders -- is exempt from VAT under the same EU-wide investment-gold framework used across the bloc. Gold coins below 90% purity don't qualify for that exemption.
Buying gold in Austria
A coin or medal priced well above its pure metal value (more than 250% of the material value) is treated in Austria as a collectible rather than investment gold and can carry a reduced 10% VAT rate instead of full exemption -- worth checking before assuming a coin purchase is VAT-free.
Tax and duty notes for Austria
Investment-grade gold coins at 90%+ purity (Vienna Philharmonic, Maple Leaf, Krugerrand, and Austria's own ducats, crowns and guilders) and qualifying bars are VAT-exempt in Austria under the EU investment-gold rules. Collector coins and medals priced well above their metal value instead carry a reduced 10% VAT rate. No gold-jewellery-specific VAT rate distinct from Austria's standard rate was found in available sources.

Methodology
How we calculate the price
- We fetch the international spot gold price (XAU/USD) live from gold-api.com, with automatic failover between providers.
- The spot rate is converted into the local currency using live exchange rates from exchangerate-api.com, then scaled by purity (24K, 22K, 18K…) and by weight (gram, tola, ounce, kilogram, baht).
- The result is the pure spot value. Retail counters may add dealer premium, tax and making charges — the number here is the underlying benchmark.
