About gold in Switzerland
Switzerland's hallmarking law, dating to 1880, applies compulsory third-party assay only to watch cases — any gold, silver or platinum watch case sold in the country must carry an official mark such as the "Head of Helvetia" for 18K gold. For all other gold jewellery, hallmarking remains optional, a narrower mandatory scope than most European hallmarking systems.
Market notes for Switzerland
Switzerland exempts qualifying investment gold from VAT under Article 107 of the Swiss VAT Act: bars and wafers must be at least 995-fine, carry the hallmark of a certified assayer-smelter (or appear on the LBMA's Good Delivery List), and qualifying coins must meet similar purity and legal-tender conditions. Jewellery and industrial gold sit outside this exemption entirely.
Buying gold in Switzerland
Jewellery in Switzerland -- including gold wristwatches, which the law treats the same way -- is always subject to VAT, unlike qualifying investment bars and coins. A Swiss quote for a bar without a recognised assayer-smelter hallmark, or one not on the LBMA Good Delivery List, may not qualify for VAT-exempt treatment even at investment-grade purity, so the hallmark itself is worth checking, not just the stated fineness.
Tax and duty notes for Switzerland
Switzerland's standard VAT rate of 8.1% applies in full to gold jewellery and other non-investment gold products. Qualifying investment gold -- 995-fine-or-better bars/wafers with a certified assayer-smelter hallmark, and equivalent coins -- is exempt from VAT under Article 107 of the VAT Act. Unusually among major markets, Switzerland does not tax private individuals on profit from selling gold, though gold holdings must still be declared on an annual tax return and may attract a cantonal wealth tax depending on where the holder resides.

Methodology
How we calculate the price
- We fetch the international spot gold price (XAU/USD) live from gold-api.com, with automatic failover between providers.
- The spot rate is converted into the local currency using live exchange rates from exchangerate-api.com, then scaled by purity (24K, 22K, 18K…) and by weight (gram, tola, ounce, kilogram, baht).
- The result is the pure spot value. Retail counters may add dealer premium, tax and making charges — the number here is the underlying benchmark.
