Premium

The markup charged above spot to buy physical gold.

Definition

The premium is the difference between the spot price and the retail price paid for a physical bar, coin or piece of jewellery. It covers refining, minting, distribution, dealer margin and, for jewellery, making charges. Premiums widen when physical demand outstrips supply.
