Bid–Ask Spread

The gap between the price a dealer buys at and the price they sell at.

Definition

The bid is what a dealer will pay you for your gold; the ask is what they charge to sell it. The spread is the dealer's working margin. Investment-grade bars carry the tightest spreads; jewellery carries the widest, because making charges are rarely recovered on resale.
