Hallmark

Official stamp certifying the purity of a gold item.

Definition

A hallmark is a stamped guarantee, applied by an assay office or authorised body, that certifies the purity of a gold article. Common marks include BIS in India, LBMA good delivery for bars, and national karat stamps such as 750 or 916. Hallmarked pieces command better resale than unmarked items.
