About gold in Japan
Japanese gold jewellery uses a distinctive "K" prefix notation — K18, K24, K14 — rather than the "18K" suffix style common elsewhere, and the mark is self-applied by the manufacturer rather than struck by an independent state assay office, unlike the British, French or Italian systems. K18 (750-fine, 75% gold) is the dominant standard for Japanese fine jewellery, bridal sets and watch cases, and is directly interchangeable with the European "750" fineness mark.
Market notes for Japan
Unlike most major gold markets, Japan applies its standard consumption tax to gold in full, with no bullion carve-out: the current 10% consumption tax is charged on gold bullion at the point of sale or import, calculated on the customs value for imports. That puts locally bought Japanese gold at a structural tax disadvantage compared with markets such as Germany, France, Switzerland, Canada or Australia, which all exempt qualifying investment-grade bullion from VAT/GST.
Buying gold in Japan
International visitors buying gold or jewellery in Japan can use the tax-free shopping scheme if the purchase is at least ¥5,000 and the visitor departs within 90 days, with the consumption tax charged at purchase and refunded through a customs-validated export process. A resident buyer has no equivalent relief and pays the 10% consumption tax on a purchase outright.
Tax and duty notes for Japan
Japan's 10% consumption tax applies to gold bullion and jewellery alike, with no investment-gold exemption of the kind common in Europe, Canada or Australia. Profit from selling gold bullion is taxed as a capital gain under Japan's Income Tax Act and combined with other income for comprehensive taxation, after a ¥500,000 special deduction. Holding period matters: for gold held five years or less, the full gain is taxable; for gold held more than five years, only half the gain is included in taxable income.

Methodology
How we calculate the price
- We fetch the international spot gold price (XAU/USD) live from gold-api.com, with automatic failover between providers.
- The spot rate is converted into the local currency using live exchange rates from exchangerate-api.com, then scaled by purity (24K, 22K, 18K…) and by weight (gram, tola, ounce, kilogram, baht).
- The result is the pure spot value. Retail counters may add dealer premium, tax and making charges — the number here is the underlying benchmark.
