About the Iran gold market

KmalServico's Iran page is built around grams and Iranian rials (IRR). Physical gold, especially in coin form, functions as one of the primary ways ordinary Iranians protect savings from currency devaluation and inflation, more than in most other markets this site covers.

Market notes

A domestic Iranian gold price is built from three layers rather than one: the international spot price, the free-market rial exchange rate (which differs from Iran's official rate), and a local demand-driven premium often referred to as the "bubble". That third layer means a domestic quote can move independently of both the spot price and the exchange rate, purely on local buying pressure.

Buying gold in Iran

The Bahar Azadi and Emami coins (8.13 grams, 90% purity) are the standard way gold is bought and held in Iran, with Half and Quarter Azadi fractional coins making ownership accessible to smaller savers who can't afford a full coin. Matching the coin type and fraction is more relevant for an Iranian quote than comparing purity percentages the way a jewellery buyer elsewhere might.

Tax & duty notes

Since Iran's Permanent VAT Act (approved 23 May 2021), a 9% VAT applies to gold and jewelry sales — but only on the making/craftsmanship fee, contract work, and seller's profit margin, not on the value of the gold itself, which is VAT-exempt (Article 26, Section 4, Clause B).

Methodology

How we calculate the price

  • We fetch the international spot gold price (XAU/USD) live from gold-api.com + xaus.com, with automatic failover between providers.
  • The spot rate is converted into the local currency using live exchange rates from exchangerate-api.com, then scaled by purity (24K, 22K, 18K…) and by weight (gram, tola, ounce, kilogram, baht).
  • The result is the pure spot value. Retail counters may add dealer premium, tax and making charges — the number here is the underlying benchmark.
