About gold in Bahrain
Bahrain formalised its official hallmarking system, the Bahrain Hallmark, in 2011 upon acceding to the Vienna Convention on the Control of the Fineness and Hallmarking of Precious Metal Objects, administered by the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Tourism. Bahrain's status as a Gulf jewellery trading hub dates back to its historic pearl-diving heritage, and its Manama Gold Souq — one of the region's oldest — remains a major centre for the gold trade today.
Market notes for Bahrain
Bahrain does not currently charge VAT on gold purchases, despite the country's standard 10% VAT rate applying broadly elsewhere -- gold and jewellery-making charges were initially brought into VAT at a 5% rate when Bahrain introduced VAT in 2019, but current practice treats gold as exempt. Bahraini gold jewellery must be stamped 14K, 18K, 21K or 22K.

- We fetch the international spot gold price (XAU/USD) live from gold-api.com, with automatic failover between providers.
- The spot rate is converted into the local currency using live exchange rates from exchangerate-api.com, then scaled by purity (24K, 22K, 18K…) and by weight (gram, tola, ounce, kilogram, baht).
- The result is the pure spot value. Retail counters may add dealer premium, tax and making charges — the number here is the underlying benchmark.
