About the Hong Kong gold market

KmalServico's Hong Kong page is built around grams and Hong Kong dollars (HKD). Hong Kong functions as one of Asia's major bullion trading hubs rather than purely a retail jewellery market, anchored by the century-old Chinese Gold & Silver Exchange Society on Mercer Street in Sheung Wan.

Market notes

Hong Kong functions as one of Asia's major bullion trading hubs, anchored by the century-old Chinese Gold & Silver Exchange Society on Mercer Street in Sheung Wan -- a market built around trading gold itself, not just selling it as jewellery. 24K (999.9 fine) is the standard purity for investment-grade bars traded there, while 22K (916 fine) remains the common standard for traditional jewellery, so the two purities shouldn't be compared on a single assumption.

Buying gold in Hong Kong

Hong Kong and Dubai are consistently cited as two of the cheapest places in the world to buy physical gold, which makes a Hong Kong quote a useful benchmark for comparing against a home-market price before assuming a domestic purchase is cheaper. Match purity first -- a 24K investment bar and a 22K jewellery piece carry meaningfully different amounts of fine gold per gram, even before any making charge is added.

Tax & duty notes

Hong Kong charges no VAT, GST, or general sales tax on gold at all. Mainland China's comparison depends on what's being bought: investment-grade gold bars and coins purchased through Shanghai Gold Exchange member channels have been VAT-exempt since 2003 and remain so, but gold jewellery effectively carries China's 13% VAT on the value-added/manufacturing portion — a burden that increased after China's November 2025 VAT reform reduced jewellers' input-tax deduction. Hong Kong's zero-tax treatment is a genuine advantage over mainland China specifically for jewellery buyers, not for investment-bar buyers, where mainland China is now also largely tax-neutral.

Methodology

How we calculate the price

  • We fetch the international spot gold price (XAU/USD) live from gold-api.com + xaus.com, with automatic failover between providers.
  • The spot rate is converted into the local currency using live exchange rates from exchangerate-api.com, then scaled by purity (24K, 22K, 18K…) and by weight (gram, tola, ounce, kilogram, baht).
  • The result is the pure spot value. Retail counters may add dealer premium, tax and making charges — the number here is the underlying benchmark.
