Gold overtook Uganda's traditional exports to become the country's single largest foreign-exchange earner in 2025, generating over $5.8 billion and accounting for 76.6% of total export earnings.

Market notes

Uganda zero-rates VAT on refined gold intended for export as of 2026, a deliberate policy to encourage legal exports and position the country as a regional gold trading hub, while separately introducing a new $200-per-kilogram export levy that applies to both local and foreign exporters.

Buying gold in Uganda

Methodology

How we calculate the price

  • We fetch the international spot gold price (XAU/USD) live from gold-api.com + xaus.com, with automatic failover between providers.
  • The spot rate is converted into the local currency using live exchange rates from exchangerate-api.com, then scaled by purity (24K, 22K, 18K…) and by weight (gram, tola, ounce, kilogram, baht).
  • The result is the pure spot value. Retail counters may add dealer premium, tax and making charges — the number here is the underlying benchmark.
