Market notes

Sri Lanka has taxed both imported gold and locally manufactured jewellery labour charges at 18% VAT since January 2024, plus a separate 2.5% Social Security Contribution Levy -- a heavy combined burden that has significantly slowed the country's jewellery sector, according to industry reporting.

Buying gold in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka's jewellery-sector tax burden is high enough that the industry itself has been publicly lobbying for relief -- factor the 18% VAT plus 2.5% SSCL into any comparison between a Sri Lankan retail quote and KmalServico's live, duty-free international reference.

Methodology

How we calculate the price

  • We fetch the international spot gold price (XAU/USD) live from xaus.com + gold-api.com, with automatic failover between providers.
  • The spot rate is converted into the local currency using live exchange rates from exchangerate-api.com, then scaled by purity (24K, 22K, 18K…) and by weight (gram, tola, ounce, kilogram, baht).
  • The result is the pure spot value. Retail counters may add dealer premium, tax and making charges — the number here is the underlying benchmark.
