About the Israel gold market

KmalServico's Israel page is built around grams and Israeli shekels (ILS). Gold is legally classified as a commodity rather than a financial asset in Israel, a distinction that shapes how it's taxed and why the local precious-metals investment market has stayed comparatively underdeveloped next to markets where investment gold is VAT-exempt.

Market notes

Gold is legally classified as a commodity in Israel rather than a financial asset -- a different treatment from markets that classify investment-grade bullion as a financial instrument and exempt it from tax accordingly. That classification is the main structural reason precious-metals investing hasn't grown into as large a retail market in Israel as it has in comparable economies.

Buying gold in Israel

Even a single gold coin has to be declared at Israeli customs, and that requirement applies whether it's a new resident's first import or a returning citizen bringing gold back from abroad. Anyone planning to bring physical gold into Israel should budget for that declaration and the VAT it triggers rather than assuming a foreign purchase arrives tax-free.

Tax & duty notes

Imported gold and silver are subject to Israel's standard 18% VAT rate at the border. That applies to both new residents and returning citizens bringing gold into the country, not just commercial importers -- there's no personal-use or investment-grade exemption carved out the way there is in some other markets.

Methodology

How we calculate the price

  • We fetch the international spot gold price (XAU/USD) live from gold-api.com + xaus.com, with automatic failover between providers.
  • The spot rate is converted into the local currency using live exchange rates from exchangerate-api.com, then scaled by purity (24K, 22K, 18K…) and by weight (gram, tola, ounce, kilogram, baht).
  • The result is the pure spot value. Retail counters may add dealer premium, tax and making charges — the number here is the underlying benchmark.
