About the United States gold market

Gold jewellery sold in the United States is not required to be hallmarked, unlike the UK's assay-office system. Instead, FTC rules under the National Gold and Silver Marking Act require that any karat stamp present (10K, 14K, 18K, etc.) be accompanied by the manufacturer's registered trademark, so the purity claim can be traced and held accountable. 10K (41.7% gold) is the lowest purity legally sellable as "gold" jewellery in the US — lower than the 8K-9K floors permitted in some other markets.

Market notes

Unlike most markets KmalServico tracks, US gold taxation isn't set nationally at all -- whether a purchase is taxed at the till is a state-by-state decision, not a federal one. That makes the buyer's own state as relevant to the final price paid as the spot rate itself.

Buying gold in United States

Roughly 42 states exempt bullion and coins from sales tax outright or above a set purchase threshold, and five states -- Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon -- charge no general sales tax at all, gold included. A remaining handful of states still apply ordinary sales tax to bullion with no carve-out, so the same coin can cost noticeably more depending on where the purchase is completed -- worth checking before comparing a dealer's quote to KmalServico's reference price.

Tax & duty notes

Federally, the IRS treats physical gold as a collectible rather than an ordinary investment, and that classification carries a real cost at sale: long-term gains on gold are taxed at up to 28%, well above the 15-20% top rate that applies to most stocks and funds held the same length of time. That federal tax comes on top of whatever state sales tax was already paid at the original purchase, not instead of it.

Methodology

How we calculate the price

  • We fetch the international spot gold price (XAU/USD) live from gold-api.com + xaus.com, with automatic failover between providers.
  • The spot rate is converted into the local currency using live exchange rates from exchangerate-api.com, then scaled by purity (24K, 22K, 18K…) and by weight (gram, tola, ounce, kilogram, baht).
  • The result is the pure spot value. Retail counters may add dealer premium, tax and making charges — the number here is the underlying benchmark.
