About the Egypt gold market

KmalServico’s Egypt page is built around grams and Egyptian pounds (EGP). That makes the live page straightforward to use when the quoted local price is also expressed per gram. The surrounding editorial content distinguishes the underlying gold value from the final price of a finished jewellery item.

Market notes

Egyptian gold buyers pay a workmanship charge known locally as "Masna3ya" on top of the metal value — typically a modest 1-2% for plain gold bars, but often exceeding 15% on detailed jewellery designs. This fee is generally non-refundable if the piece is resold, so it's worth confirming before a purchase. Local EGP gold prices can also "decouple" from the international rate for short periods, particularly when the pound weakens or import conditions tighten, meaning a quoted Egyptian price may not always move in lockstep with the global spot price.

Buying gold in Egypt

World Gold Council data shows Egypt’s jewellery demand has been affected by inflation and currency volatility, with jewellery demand falling year on year in Q2 2026. This makes price movement and affordability relevant context when reading a live EGP gold quote.

Tax & duty notes

Egypt's standard retail purity is 21K (87.5% fine) -- a distinctly different default from the higher purities common across the Gulf, so a quoted Egyptian price isn't directly comparable to a 22K or 24K figure without converting purity first. Jewellery purchases can also carry VAT on the making charge in addition to the workmanship fee itself, where the sale qualifies.

Egypt's immediate sub-region doesn't list enough markets on its own, so this also includes other Africa countries.

Methodology

How we calculate the price

  • We fetch the international spot gold price (XAU/USD) live from gold-api.com + xaus.com, with automatic failover between providers.
  • The spot rate is converted into the local currency using live exchange rates from exchangerate-api.com, then scaled by purity (24K, 22K, 18K…) and by weight (gram, tola, ounce, kilogram, baht).
  • The result is the pure spot value. Retail counters may add dealer premium, tax and making charges — the number here is the underlying benchmark.
