Gold makes up an unusually high share of Uzbekistan's foreign reserves — around 85% as of early 2026, among the highest gold-to-reserves ratios of any country, with total holdings of roughly 380 tonnes ranking it among the world's top 20 official gold holders. The Central Bank of Uzbekistan stores all of this gold domestically rather than abroad, and holds a priority right under Uzbek law to purchase gold from domestic refiners, sourced largely from the Muruntau mine — one of the largest open-pit gold mines in the world.

Until January 1, 2028, jewellery manufacturers calculate VAT on the net difference between sale price and the value of precious metals/stones contained, with an automatic 80% monthly VAT reclaim available during the transition. Imports of precious stones for jewellery-making remain VAT-free until January 1, 2027.
