Gold Price in Vietnam Today

Vietnam's domestic gold price has historically traded at a large premium to the international rate — commonly $300-800 per ounce above the global benchmark — a gap linked to decades of state control, including a 2012 decree that made state-owned Saigon Jewellery Company (SJC) the sole legal producer of gold bars. That monopoly only ended in August 2025 under a new decree opening bullion production to a small number of licensed banks and companies. Gold in Vietnam is traditionally quoted per tael (lượng), not gram or troy ounce.

Vietnam charges 10% VAT on gold jewellery purchases. Imported jewellery from ASEAN countries is exempt from import duty but still carries the 10% VAT, while jewellery imported from outside ASEAN carries a 30% import duty on top of the same 10% VAT. Separately, a new personal income tax of 0.1% on the value of each gold bullion transfer was legislated under the 2025 Law on Personal Income Tax (Law No. 109/2025/QH15), nominally effective July 1, 2026 -- but as of that date the government had not yet issued the implementing regulations needed to actually begin collecting it, so the tax exists in law without being enforced in practice yet.

Vietnam's domestic gold price is quoted per tael (lượng), a different unit from the gram or troy ounce used elsewhere on this page -- always convert explicitly rather than assuming a quoted number is directly comparable. Because a new gold-transfer tax has been legislated but its collection mechanism isn't yet operating, don't assume the 0.1% figure is currently being withheld at point of sale; confirm the live rule with a dealer or Vietnamese tax authority before a transaction.
