About gold in Philippines
The Philippine central bank, Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP), is the sole legal buyer of gold from the country's small-scale miners under the People's Small-Scale Mining Act of 1991, and is also an LBMA-accredited refiner. Much of that refined gold supplies Meycauayan, Bulacan — a town long known as the jewellery-manufacturing capital of the Philippines for its gold filigree craftsmanship.
Market notes for Philippines
The Philippines exempts gold sold to the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) from VAT, provided the gold is in bar or disc form and the seller obtains BSP certification under Republic Act 11256 -- jewellery does not qualify for this exemption, and general gold sales carry 12% VAT above a defined price threshold.
Buying gold in Philippines
The BSP VAT exemption in the Philippines applies only to bar or disc-form gold sold directly to the central bank under formal certification -- a piece of jewellery never qualifies, so a retail jewellery purchase should be expected to carry standard VAT and withholding tax rather than the BSP's exempt treatment.
Tax and duty notes for Philippines
Gold sold to the Philippine central bank (BSP) in bar or disc form is VAT-exempt under Republic Act 11256, with formal BSP certification required -- jewellery is explicitly excluded from this exemption. General gold sales above roughly ₱1.92 million are subject to 12% VAT (or a 3% percentage tax below that threshold), plus a 2% excise tax and a 1% creditable withholding tax on gold trades (reduced from 5% in 2017).

Methodology
How we calculate the price
- We fetch the international spot gold price (XAU/USD) live from xaus.com + gold-api.com, with automatic failover between providers.
- The spot rate is converted into the local currency using live exchange rates from exchangerate-api.com, then scaled by purity (24K, 22K, 18K…) and by weight (gram, tola, ounce, kilogram, baht).
- The result is the pure spot value. Retail counters may add dealer premium, tax and making charges — the number here is the underlying benchmark.
